The Iowa Restaurant Association recently recognized the creativity, leadership, and contributions of women across all sectors of the hospitality industry with their 2024 ‘40 Women to Watch in the Hospitality Industry’ awards. Among this year’s honorees was Brenda Ochiltree, co-owner of the historic Wilton Candy Kitchen in Wilton, Iowa.
Brenda attended the Celebrating Excellence Award Ceremony and Grand Tasting Gala, hosted by the Iowa Restaurant Association on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Community Choice Convention Center in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. As a VIP attendee, she joined 39 other exceptional women from across Iowa who were recognized for their impactful contributions to the hospitality field.
It is unknown who nominated Brenda for this recognition, as nominations come from friends, colleagues, and patrons. However, whoever put her name forward clearly recognized the outstanding service, leadership, and commitment she brings to her role in the hospitality industry.
Brenda, along with her husband Lynn, previously operated a funeral home where the couple provided excellence in service to grieving families. For the past nine years, they have been privileged to own and operate the Wilton Candy Kitchen, where Brenda continues that tradition of excellence. The Candy Kitchen, a historic establishment, welcomes over 30,000 customers annually and remains a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike.
With nearly two decades of experience in customer service, Brenda emphasizes a simple yet profound philosophy: “Be sincere. Treat people as you would want to be treated, and do it with a smile.” Her leadership has left a lasting impact, ensuring that every visitor to the Candy Kitchen experiences exceptional service steeped in tradition.
